Growing Up (and Sideways): 4 Lessons Life Keeps Teaching Me

Life doesn’t come with a manual, but it’s generous with lessons, which are often delivered at the most inconvenient times.

Every now and then, I pause not for a milestone or anything fancy, but to ask: “Am I still heading in the right direction, or am I just busy?”

Somewhere between family, friendships, career pivots, and figuring out why life requires so many passwords, I have picked up a few lessons about growth. Interestingly, life it’s rarely a straight line.

1. Growth isn’t always upward; sometimes it’s inward: Life loves to humble you. One minute you are sure you have figured it out, the next, you’re Googling “How to…” at midnight. I used to think progress meant constant upward motion, like new wins, new shiny moments. Turns out, the best growth sneaks up on you quietly: learning patience, building resilience, or admitting, “Okay, maybe I was wrong about that.” Those moments don’t make headlines, but they are what actually change you.

2. Adaptability beats having all the answers: Life rarely sends a memo before it changes the rules. Plans shift, people change, and suddenly you are figuring things out on the go. I have learned that flexibility is way more useful than perfection. Being able to laugh, pivot, and say, “Alright, new plan!” is often what keeps you sane when life does its plot twists.

3. People make the journey worth it: Success feels different when you have the right people to share it with. The friends who cheer you on, the family who remind you who you are. The colleagues who turn long days into something bearable. That’s the good stuff. Investing in people always pays off in ways milestones never can.

4. Reflection is underrated: I used to think slowing down was falling behind. Now I know pausing to ask “What did I learn? What should I do differently?” is what keeps me moving in the right direction. Reflection doesn’t mean you are stuck; it means you are paying attention.

Life is still evolving. New challenges will come, new wins, new lessons I don’t see coming.

My plan? Stay curious. Stay grounded. Keep growing in ways that make me proud, not just busy. Growth, I have realized, isn’t about doing more. It’s about becoming someone you genuinely like living with.

What’s one lesson life has taught you recently that you didn’t see coming?
